A dashboard light doesn't tell you much on its own. The code behind it does. We plug in, read it, and translate it into plain English.
What does a car diagnostic check involve? A diagnostic check connects a scan tool to the car's computer to read stored fault codes, then interprets them to find the underlying issue. It's the first step to fixing a warning light or intermittent fault, and points to the actual cause rather than clearing the light.
Common warning lights
- Check engine light — the broad one, could be minor or worth acting on quickly
- Battery / charging light — usually the charging system
- ABS or brake light — the braking system needs a look
- Oil pressure light — treat as urgent, stop and call
- Temperature light — overheating, don't keep driving
Some lights mean "book it in soon". Others mean "stop now". If you're not sure which, call and describe it.
Reading the code is only half the job
Plenty of places clear the light and send you off. That's not a fix. We read the code, then work out what's actually causing it, since one code can have several causes. You get the real problem and a plan, not a reset that comes back on next week.
