Selling privately
If you're selling to a private buyer, you need a valid safety certificate before the registration can be transferred. You also display the certificate details when you advertise the car. We inspect the car at your place and issue the certificate on site if it passes, so you can list it with confidence.
Transferring to family or a private buyer
A transfer of ownership needs a current safety certificate, even between family members, unless a specific exemption applies. If you're not sure whether your situation is exempt, ask us and we'll point you to the right information.
How long you've got to sell
For a private seller the certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first, and it covers one sale only. If the car takes longer to sell, or you drive past 2,000 km, you'll need a fresh inspection. Keep that timing in mind before you book, there's no point getting one months before you list.
What if it doesn't pass?
If the car doesn't meet the standard, we give you the list of what needs doing. Because we're also a mobile mechanic, we can carry out many of those repairs and re-inspect, so your sale isn't held up by chasing another workshop.
